ABC Studios 31 and 32

As part of the ABC’s major renovations to its Melbourne broadcast centre, Studio 31 and 32 required dedicated sound and lighting trusses to be installed. In addition to the vast size of each unit, each truss needed to be mounted on specialised pads.

DESCRIPTION

A total of seven 42-tonne trusses were manufactured at Stilcon, each requiring a huge amount of hand welding. With each unit measuring 22m x 4m, at fabrication, each truss required specialist lifting and elevation equipment to allow the welders adequate access to the joints.  The steel was then fire-proofed, transported and lifted into position by tower cranes. As a further challenge, in order to improve sound absorption, the supporting columns sat on cured-rubber isolation pads each of which needed to be carefully positioned and adjusted with help from the Stilcon team, to ensure absolute stability. Stilcon also provided and installed the gratings and gantries on the studio walls to allow for safe access to the trusses.
